History:
| Composed by Tomiyama Seikin I in 1954, lyrics by Matsumoto Kamematsu. Commissioned by Onoe Kikunojo, this is the first commissioned original dance piece. Based on the Noh play "Kinuta." A wife from Ashiya, Chikuzen Province, whose husband has been away in the capital due to business and hasn't returned for three years, conveys her love and resentment for him through the sound of a kinuta (a traditional fulling block used while washing fabric), entrusting it to the pine winds to send to her husband in the capital. The plot of this piece is adapted from the Noh play, in which the wife's love remains undiminished, even as she is accused of adultery after his death, and quotes lines from a Noh play where appropriate. The lyricist sets the time period as the Edo period, around the Genroku era. |
