Shigeo Tachibana graduated with a Grand Master's degree of the Tozan style of modern shakuhachi music, studying under Narita Rokuzan. He continued his studies of the shakuhachi in the classical Kinko style and Hu-ke music (formally known as Zen music) with master Mitsuhashi Kifu, one of the most prominent shakuhachi performers in Japan.

He has won numerous competitions demonstrating his expertise on the shakuhachi. Competitions include NHK (Japan Broadcasting Network) contests, where he was given distinction in both modern and traditional forms of shakuhachi music, winner of the Japan Shakuhachi Association's competition in 2004 and 2005, the Breeze Young Musicians Competition, and the Zenkoku Hougaku (all Japan Traditional Music) competition, nationally boradcast by NHK.
