Born December 12, 1936 in Tokyo, Manabe Shizuse (Manabe Shizuko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamase Shōin II (fifth iemoto of the Yamase school), graduated from the music department of the Tokyo University of Education Teacher Training School and started teaching in 1962. She was head of the Sōkyoku Shinsei-kai, director of the Seiin-kai, and council member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
