Born March 23, 1923 in Tokyo, Yagi Keiji studied Ikuta-ryū koto and Kyushu-kei shamisen under Kawase Satoko, earning his teacher certification in 1950. A prolific performer and recording artist, he was head of the Yataya-kai and belonged to the Rinshin-kai. He was also a planning committee member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai. His career spanned more than five decades before his passing in 2009.
