Satō Gesshū (Satō Toranosuke) was a leading figure in Kyoto's shakuhachi world during the Meiji and Taishō eras. He organized workshops, house concerts, and held tea gatherings for the shakuhachi community. A student of Kawase Junsuke I, he taught Kinko-ryū shakuhachi (under the aegis of Chikuyū-sha) and was also an accomplished shakuhachi maker and repair craftsman. His instruments were highly-regarded in the Kansai region. He was considered a great community builder, a truly remarkable individual, and was an influential presence in Kyoto.
