Born April 5, 1928 in Kōchi Prefecture, Kubo Shigeru studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Usui Shiso, Miyagi Michio, and Miyagi Kiyoko. He graduated from the Hōgaku Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts. He was a director of the Miyagi-kai (and head of the Kantō branch), president of the Shigeri-kai, and a council member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
