Suyama Tomoyuki was born in Ehime Prefecture, September 7, 1918. He studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Miyagi Michio, earning his masters license in 1937. He received the Osaka Citizens' Cultural Festival Art Award in 1948, and won other awards in 1964 and 1965. A performer and teacher for more than 50 years, he was head of the Togen-sha, a director of Miyagi-kai, and lecturer at Osaka College of Music.
