Born in Yokohama, January 1, 1917, Nishiyama Matsue studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Mannen Akii and Nakanoshima Kin’ichi. She graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, received honorable mention in the Tokyo Shimbun Composition Competition, and began teaching in 1936. Active as a performer and teacher for more than 50 years, she was a chairman of the Shōchō-kai and a director of the Yokohama Sankyoku Association.
