Born in Tokyo, February 25, 1936, Hara Itoe (Hara Yūko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Itō Shōchō and Shimojō Kikui, earning her teaching credentials in 1946. She was head of the Tsubomi-kai, a member of the Busei-kai, and was active as a performer and teacher for more than 40 years.
