Born October 20, 1899 in Hokkaido, Maeda Utasumi (Maeda Tsuru) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Nakajima Utashito, Miyagi Michio, and Koshino Eishō. In 1966, she participated in a Japan-Soviet Friendship Concert Tour. During a career spanning more than 60 years, she was a director of the Seiha Hōgaku-kai, head of its Hokkaido branch, and head of the Wakana-kai. She was also president of the Sapporo Sankyoku Kyōkai.
