Born March 2, 1887 in Okayama Prefecture, Matsui Gasen (Matsui Shizu) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamashita Baiju and Kikudō Kōtō of the Tōdō-kai. She received the Asahikawa City Culture Award in 1956, and the Seiha 50th Anniversary Award in 1968. She belonged to the Seiha Hōgaku-kai Foundation and was head of the Seiha Seichō-kai.
