Born January 3, 1921 in Tokyo, Matsumoto Shōsen (Matsumoto Koko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Saitō Shōsei and Hisamoto Genchi. She graduated from the music department of the Tokyo School for the Blind in 1945 and began teaching the same year. She was the head of the Shōsen-kai.
