Born March 15, 1915 in Yamada City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Murakami Kayō studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Matsuo Kōtō and Chikushi Katsuko. She started teaching in 1934 and belonged to the Chikushi-kai. Her activities as a teacher and a performer spanned more than 40 years.
