Born October 14, 1943 in Tokyo, Yokoi Sonochiaki (Yokoi Akiko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamakawa Enshō. She graduated from the 8th class of the NHK Hōgaku Ikusei-kai in 1963, passed the NHK audition in 1966, and began teaching in 1969. She was a member of the Shunwa-kai.
