Born in Okayama Prefecture, March 10, 1903, Sunazaki Sumie studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Araki Komi, Ono Seiyū, and Miyagi Michio, earning her masters license in 1920.
A performer and teacher for 60 years, she was a council member of the Miyagi-kai.
