Born March 6, 1915, Machida Kachiyō (Machida Sumiyo) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Sunazaki Sumie (Miyagi school) and Chikushi Katsuko. She started teaching in 1936. During her almost 50-year career she was the director of Chikushi-kai Headquarters, Vice President of Saitama Prefecture Traditional Japanese Music and Dance Association, and a permanent director of the Hōgaku Kyōkai. She was also the recipient of the Saitama Prefecture Arts and Culture Encouragement Medal and Merit Award.
