With a career spanning more than 70 years, Hirano Kiyosenju (Hirano Kiyo) was born December 8, 1879 in Tokyo. She studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamase Shōin I and Hirano Chiyo (her mother). She began teaching in 1902. She was head of Seimei-kai, a member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai and the Yamada-ryū Kyōkai.
