Kataoka Utakazu (Kataoka Kazuko) was born in Hiroshima Prefecture on September 19, 1922. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Hamada Kayoko and Wataya Kotoe and started teaching in 1934. She belonged to the Chikushi-kai, was head of the Kirimon-kai, Okayama, and had a career that spanned more than 50 years.
