Born February 26, 1893 in Aomori Prefecture, Araya Kieko (Orito Kie) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Miyagi Michio. She began teaching in 1911. She was head of the Meigen-kai and director of the Miyagi-kai as well as a councillor of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyokai. The daughter of famous Nezasa-ha Kinpū-ryū shakuhachi player Orito Nyogetsu, she was active in the Hōgaku world for more than 60 years.
