Watanabe Sumiko was born April 30th, 1913 in Fukuoka Prefecture.
She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Miyagi Michio and Watanabe Chieko and started teaching in 1930.
She was a councillor of the Miyagi Association and head of the Kotobuki-kai.
