Abu Hōzan (Abu Shurō) was born October 28, 1931. A graduate of the Maritime University, he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kitaura Nazan (a student of Ikeda Seizan I), achieving the rank of Dai-Shihan and the title Chikurin-ken.
