Aso Kyōzan (Aso Shigeo) was born November 27, 1934 in Yamagata Prefecture. He studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Ryūsen Gyōki and received his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) license in 1972. He belonged to the Kanto branch of the Ueda-ryū.
