Born August 18, 1915 in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Okita Shishū (Okita Shizuo) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Kishida Seidō and Ueda Kadō. He started teaching in 1955 and belonged to the Meihō-kai. He was active as a performer and teacher for over 40 years.
