Born December 7, 1897 in Fukui Prefecture, Okutani Itsuka (Okutani Yoshimi) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Nakano Rodō and began teaching in 1933. During his more than 55-year career he was an advisor to the Itsune-kai and received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon in 1955.
