Sakuma Chizan (Sakuma Shigeru) was born August 8, 1934 in Fukushima Prefecture. He studied Yōzan-ryū shakuhachi under Katsuta Yōzan, eventually attaining the designation of Dai-Shihan. He was the secretary of the Tokyo Yōzan-kai.
