Born in Tokyo, February 7, 1931, (Gotō Utayasu) (Gotō Sumiko) studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Miyagi Michio and Nakajima Yasuko. She graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1954, won first place at the Moscow Folk Instrument Competition in 1957, and was a recipient of the Arts Festival Encouragement Award. She was a member of the Hōgaku Yonin no Kai, the Seiha Hōgaku-kai, and the Mori no Kai, and has an extensive recorded catalog.
