Sugimura Tokō (Sugimura Masaru) was born February 1, 1949 in Osaka. He studied Muraji-ryū shakuhachi under Kinoshita Toichi and started teaching in 1968. He was a member of the Muraji-ryu Shakuhachi Kyōkai, the Toichi-kai, the Kansai University Alumni Association, and the Ashikai-kai.
