Born on September 14, 1906 in Tokushima Prefecture, Nishioka Reizan (Nishioka Asatarō) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Ōmatsu Kōzan and Miyake Shūzan. During his more than 50 years in shakuhachi he began teaching in 1958 and was a council member of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai.
