Born July 8, 1904 in Gifu Prefecture, Ōta Ryōdō (Ōta Shigeru) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Kaneyasu Tōdō. He began teaching in 1937. He belonged to the Nihon Chiku-dō Gakkan and was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 50 years.
