Born September 1, 1900 in Hiroshima Prefecture, Hira Gyokuzan (Hira Shigekazu) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Kōno Rodō (Ueda Hōdō lineage). He started teaching in 1921. He belonged to the Chikusui-kai. He had a career that lasted over 50 years.
