Born January 11, 1913 in Okayama Prefecture, Furutani Shūzan (Furutani Zenpei) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Shirakami Pōzan. He started teaching in 1961. He belonged to the Okayama Prefecture Branch of the Tozan-ryū
