Yamada Shōdō (Yamada Yoshitsugu) was born March 4th, 1913 in Kyoto Prefecture. He studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Arima Kodō and Ueda Chikudō. He started teaching in 1935. He was a member of the Ueda-ryu Shakuhachi-dō Kobe executive committee. His career in shakuhachi lasted more than 40 years.
