Matsushima Itoju was the second daughter of Matsushima Hisato, a feudal lord of the Fukuoka domain. She was a talented young woman who studied under Ōtsuka Kikujuichi, a disciple of Miyahara, and was awarded the full master's license (Shihan) at the age of 16. In 1870, she went to Tokyo, then returned to Fukuoka, but in 1882 she settled in Tokyo permanently, where she trained Amagasa Saiju, Nosaka Sōjū, and others.
