Laonikos Psimikakis Chalkokondylis is a shakuhachi teacher based in London, offering individual tuition, workshops and online teaching to students across the UK and internationally. His teaching integrates traditional shakuhachi technique and repertoire with careful attention to embouchure, posture, listening, and supporting with developing a sustainable practice.

Laonikos studied on the Global Music Master course at the Sibelius Academy (2013-16, University of the Arts Helsinki), where he studied with Nathan Riki Thomson and Outi Pulkkinen, and previously studied composition with Paul Newland at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (2007-11). He started studying shakuhachi with Clive Bell in 2014, and is now studying under Kakizakai Kaoru.

He has performed at venues including the Barbican Centre and Kings Place, and internationally across Europe and Southeast Asia, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and Resonance FM. Recent projects include performing Karl Jenkins’ Requiem with the Fulham & Hammersmith Choral Society, appearing as the opening act for HYPER JAPAN 2025 in Manchester, and recording shakuhachi for the Japan Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2025.

Laonikos previously served on the board of the European Shakuhachi Society (2023–25) and is Head of Programmes at Sound and Music in the UK. He is a former Making Tracks Fellow (2020) and in 2022 received an Arts Council England DYCP grant to deepen his shakuhachi practice. His teaching is informed by long-term engagement with contemporary music, ecology and reflective practice.

He teaches shakuhachi online and from his home in London. He is an accredited coach and takes a student-led approach to teaching, supporting students to develop their own practice and deepen their awareness to accelerate learning.
