Born January 20, 1916 in Tokyo, Yamase Shōin II (Kihara Yoshiko) was the adopted daughter of Yamase Fuku (who was the adopted daughter of Yamase Shōin I). She studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen with her mother and, later, Imai Keishō, who gave her the designation of Shōin II. She started teaching in 1937. A prolific performer and recording artist, she received the Encouragement Award at the Arts Festival in 1966, won the Excellence Award in 1970, performed in front of the Emperor in 1971, and was a lecturer at Miwada Gakuen and Ochanomizu University. She was head of the Seiin-kai, head of the Chōyō-kai, a director of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai, and a director of the Yamada-ryū Kyōkai. Yamase Shōin II was the fifth iemoto of the Yamase school. She passed away in 2003 after a remarkable 60-year career.
