Born December 15, 1909 in Gunma Prefecture, Miyashita Shūretsu (Miyashita Tetsurō) studied music theory and composition under Tanabe Hisao. He also studied Yamada-ryū koto and graduated from Tokyo School for the Blind. He was head of the Shūretsu-sha Shisen-kai, a lecturer at Jūmonji Gakuen, and received the Minister of Education Award, the NHK Award, the Arts Festival Encouragement Award, and the Miyagi Award, among others.
