A leading figure in min'yō shakuhachi, Yoneya made his debut as a singer in 1959 with "Miyagino Bon Uta" (Miyagino Bon Song). In addition to appearing on radio and TV min'yō programs, he also composed music and produced a music video "The World of Yoneya Iwao Shakuhachi" featuring Latin pop songs and enka, etc. He was active as a singer and shakuhachi player. He also worked to teach younger generations.
