Shakuhachi

Hoshida Ichizan was born in Osaka in 1894. He began his shakuhachi studies with Nakao Tozan in 1916 and received his masters license in 1921. He made a name for himself interacting with koto and shamisen players, writing shakuhachi parts for songs like Yuki and Kurokami. He extended his playing into the world of modern compositions with songs by Miyagi Michiyo and others, including contemporary music from the west. A former director of the Osaka Sankyoku Association, he was a well-respected performer and broadcast and recording artist (Toshiba EMI).
