Kitagawa Toshiko was born in Kumamoto City, February 28, 1921. She studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Takemori Sueko and Kitagawa Machio (her husband), earning her teaching credentials in 1940. Along with Kitagawa, she was co-leader of the Jusō-kai.
