Kuroiwa Kikue was born in Nagano Prefecture, October 5, 1916. She studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Tokutake Taneko and Sakai Kaoruko, earning her teaching license in 1942. A member of the Tōdō Ongaku-kai and the Kinyū-kai, she was a performer and teacher for more than 45 years.
