Matsuhiro Sumi (Katsumata Sumiko) was born August 8, 1925 in Osaka. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Matsumoto Hisashi and Nakamura Sōyō I. She started teaching in 1953 and was the head of the Kokin-kai. She was an active performer and teacher for more than 40 years.
