Yamada Misa was born August 2, 1912 in Aomori Prefecture. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Miyagi Michio, Miyagi Kiyoko, Miyagi Kazue, and her mother, Araya Kieko. She graduated from the 4th term of the NHK Hōgaku Ikusei-kai and started teaching in 1947. She was a member of both the Miyagi-kai and Meiko-kai.
