Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, November 5, 1922, Satō Sonoetsu (Satō Mako) studied Yamada-ryū shamisen and koto under Yamakawa Enshō. She began teaching in 1950, passed the NHK audition in 1961, and belonged to the Shunwa-kai and was head of the Nazuna-kai.
