Born May 14, 1902 in Morioka City, Orikasa Ganzan (Orikasa Teisaku) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kurakawa Shōzan. He became an instructor in 1932. He belonged to the Tōto-kai and was active in the shakuhachi world for over 50 years.
