Sumiya Shūho (Sumiya Hidemasa) was born May 23, 1933 in Aichi Prefecture. He studied Chikuho-ryū shakuhachi under Sakai Shoho and began teaching in 1967. He was a member of the Shoko-kai, Seibi-kai, and Oriental Music Association. He was the vice-chief of the Chukyo branch of the Chikuho-ryū and a member of the Kariya City Seiko-kai guidance committee.
