Born November 30, 1914 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Takamatsu Genzan (Takamatsu Shigehiro) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Matsuoka Seizan and Nikaidō Suzan. He started teaching in 1950. He was the head of the Tozan-ryū Genyū-kai and had a 40+-year career in shakuhachi.
