Maehara Reidō (Maehara Shoji) was born February 22, 1931 in Tochigi Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Ishii Shūfū (AKA Ishii Shūdō). He started teaching in 1955. During his more than 40 years as a shakuhachi performer and teacher, he was a member of the Ashikaga Shūfū-kai, the Ryomo Sankyoku Association, and the Tochigi Prefecture Sankyoku Association.
