Muraji Kokan (Muraji Iwao) was born on February 7, 1928 in Osaka. He studied Muraji-ryū shakuhachi under his father, Muraji Kyodō, as his eldest and from whom he received his Shihan (masters license). He is a member of the Muraji-ryū Shakuhachi-kai. His shakuhachi career spanned more than 40 years.
