Sakata Ryōzan

Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Studied under Kishihara Shuzan and Kawamura Taizan while a student at Kobe University. Graduated from the 30th NHK Hogaku Technicians' Training Course, and won the Gold Prize and the Minister of Education Prize at the 13th Tozan School Honkyoku Competition, as well as various other prizes at other competitions. In addition to participating in Ondekoza performances he has performed with a variety of musicians and has performed overseas on numerous occasions. He has recorded CDs and made numerous appearances on TV. He has led the shakuhachi-centered band "Neutral" and is active in a wide range of activities from classical to contemporary music. He is a grand master of the Tozan school of shakuhachi. He is a part-time lecturer at the Toho Gakuen College of Art and Design's Japanese Music Shakuhachi Department.
