Tateshige Kazuei

Koto

Born in Osaka 1886, Tateshige Kazuei (Umegaki Eikichi) lost his sight at the age of four. In 1893 he began his studies of Ikuta-ryū koto with Tateyama Noboru.
He joined the Nihon Tōdō Ongaku-kai when it was established in 1915, but left in 1943 to become part of the reorganized Tōdō Hōgaku-kai. Tateshige became the head of that group in 1945.
He was also a director of the Ōsaka Sankyoku Kyōkai and served as a koto teacher at the Osaka Prefectural School for the Blind from 1941 to 1946.
Tateshige was presented with the Distinguished Service in Social Education Award by the governor of Osaka Prefecture.
He was active as a performer and teacher for 80 years.
